“On Friday, the Calder Quartet, which has been in residence at the Colburn School this season, drew the largest crowd I've ever seen at Zipper, and for good reason. Even more amazing, the near-capacity audience held its absolute silence during the Calder's stunning performance of the Shostakovich Quartet No. 15, that heartbreaking work constructed of six continuous near-pianissimo movements in a bottomless pit …”

Calder String Quartet: Jonathan Moerschel (JC 91–92, SC 94–96), Eric Byers, Benjamin Jacobsen, Andrew Bulbrook (JC 91, SC 92–94)
Aptly named after the great American visual artist Alexander Calder, The Calder Quartet explores boundaries of chamber music with a keen acumen for combining the best of the traditional and the avant-garde. The group has been praised for its “splendor and substance,” (LA Weekly) and, taking a cue from its namesake, the Calder Quartet boldly searches for new ways to stretch the capabilities, combinations, and definition of a string quartet.
The Calder Quartet is The Juilliard School's graduate string quartet-in-residence. Highlights of the Quartet's 06–07 season include a return to Alice Tully Hall and their debut at the Orange County Performing Arts. The group also continues its relationships with the Colburn School in Los Angeles and the Carlsbad Music Festival, an alternative classical music festival in Carlsbad, CA that the group co-founded with composer Matt McBane.
Tax-deductible donations of $25, $50, $100, or more, are encouraged to benefit Greenwood's Annual Fund, which provides crucial scholarship assistance and operating support every year. Contact Amy Nee, Director of Development for more information: development@greenwoodmusiccamp.org or (413) 323-1053
